The weather conditions over the last week meant the course was playing long and difficult with few people managing to handle the heavy conditions. In second place was Paul McCarthy (12) with a 65 which was the best score of the Saturday players. The gross was won by Barry Rumley (5) with a fine 74. In third place was Colin Paul (11) whose 69 just edged out Nicholas Walsh (17) on the last nine holes.

Lismore Regain Country Clubs Title in Fine Style
The weekend before last saw our country clubs panel head off to Killarney to compete in the Semi Final and Finals of Munster Country Clubs. This competition is open to 9 hole courses in the Munster region.  Having defeated Templemore and Spanish Point in the early rounds the team headed to Killarney with high hopes of winning a 4th title in this competition.

The panel of 10 players headed down on the Saturday evening for practice and a gentle bonding session in preparation for the big games on Sunday. On the Sunday morning we faced stiff opposition in the form of Abbeyfeale Golf Club. There team had a great blend of youth and experience and from the tee shots down the first, we knew we faced an uphill battle if we wished to progress.  After the first nine there was very little in most matches but all players were going well in all matches. Ritchie Ormonde started the ball rolling with a fine win on the 13th green. Moments later John Whelan notched up our second win on the 17th green. Not to be outdone Terence Rumley closed out his match with a fine 3 and 2 victory. We just needed one more from the games out the course. Declan Glavin and Kevin Roche were all square with 2 and 1 holes left respectively before last man out Paul McCarthy dully obliged winning his game 4 and 3 to book our place in the final.
So we now had the final to look forward to against our great rivals from Cobh. They had beaten us the year previously in the semi final so again we knew we would be up against it. The manager Maurice Cahillane had some tough decisions to make in selecting his 7 men for the final as all players had done so well in the morning. Two fresh legs were introduced with James Bennett and Ted O’Leary replacing the unlucky Seamus Beecher and Declan Glavin. James Bennett was the first to set for battle and it was clear from early on that it was going to a be a ding dong match all the way. John Whelan also started in fine fashion and Terence Rumley started like a train covering the first three holes in 2 under to take a 3 hole lead. Number four out was the great Ritchie Ormonde who took command of his match early on. Kevin Roche and Ted O’Leary were also moving along nicely leaving Paul to bring up the rear. After nine holes it looked like barring a disaster we had 3 matches in the bag with Terence, Ritchie and Ted well ahead. The question was where the other victory would come from. The sooner we could get a win from one of the rest of the lads the better as the pressure would start mounting the longer the games went on. They have a stretch on the course from 14 to 17 which is aptly named Amen corner where any a good card could be ruined and no lead would be big enough playing those holes. First out James Bennett trailed by a hole going down the last and was unlucky to go down by one hole. However not before long we secured our first win as Terence Rumley won impressively 6 and 4. The crucial game was when John Whelan secured the half he needed on eighteen to win by one hole. With John’s victory and Ritchie and Ted in very commanding positions the winning post was getting ever nearer. Amen corner started to take its toll but Ritchie secured victory on the 16th and not long after that Ted O Leary won at the same hole to clinch a marvellous win for Maurice’s men. Kevin Roche was called in all square with one to play with the might Mac still plodding away at the rear.
This was the 4th time that Lismore has won this competition and the 2nd time in 3 years with many of the lads being on the panel on both occasions. Maurice led his troops in fine style and thanked the entire panel for their efforts not only during this weekend but also in the previous rounds also. Special mention for our club mascot Rachel who strolled the fairways all day and he also thanked our loyal band of supporters who made the long journey down to Killarney.  Click HERE for Photos
Open 18 Hole Stableford sponsored by Ann Tobin
Due to our successful excursion to Killarney we had no golf notes last weekend but our Open 18 Hole competition was kindly sponsored by Ann Tobin. The winner was big hitting John Rumley (11) who had a great round of 41 points. 2nd place went to another big hitter Ger Ahern (4) who had an excellent 40 points or level par. This now takes Ger down to his all time low of 3 handicap, so well done Ger. Not to outdone by the prowess of his family members Barry Rumley (6) won the gross with a fine score of 31 points gross. 3rd place went to Sean Desmond (13) just clinching victory with his 38 points on the last nine.

18 Hole Versus Par.
Last Sunday we had 18 holes versus par and despite the inclement weather scoring was again of the highest order. 1st place went to Ted O’Leary (12) fresh from his Country Clubs win the previous weekend returning a fine score of 5 up. Married life seems to be suiting Barry Rumley as for the second week in a row he got in the prizes with a score of 3 up. Third place went to Marty McNamara whose 2 up just edged out Willie Henry on the last 3 holes.
Lady Captains Prize (Tricia Bolger McCarthy)
The Lady Captains Prize kindly presented by Tricia Bolger McCarthy was competed for last Saturday the 16th of August and for a change they got the best of the weather over the weekend. The winner with an excellent score of 65 was Katherine Neville (36) winning by a shot from Brenda Barry. The gross went to Betty Joyce and Gretta Barry kept it in the family claiming 3rd place. There was a large turnout of ladies for the big day and they danced the night away with blue flags flying high in anticipation that Sunday would be a great day for the blue and white. Suffice to say it was ever better than that with a great victory in Croke Park against near neighbours Tipperary.
Annual Barbecue
Our annual Barbecue will take place next Saturday night the 23rd of August commencing with a nine hole mixed scramble at 6.00 pm. Food and music from 9pm. Tickets €10 including golf from any committee member.

John McGrath & Brid Henry Worthy Winners of Presidents Prizes.
This was the first time that we staged a dual men's and ladies finals day together and it was a great success.
On a fantastic weekend to remember for many reasons we had everything from great sunshine to high winds and torrential showers but none the less scoring was the best we have seen in living memory. The President's Prize to the Men kindly presented by Mr. Pat Bennett was held over the Bank Holiday Weekend and what a weekend we had. Qualifying rounds took place on Friday and Saturday with the top 54 players competing on Sunday for the big prize. The scoring was so good it is impossible to mention everyone who posted a notable score but it was a great credit to our President that so many people turned out and played such top quality golf. Special mention and praise must go to Michael O'Regan and Tony Keane and the greens staff for presenting the course in such fine order under such harrowing weather conditions.
The story began on Friday morning and before long it was clear that scoring was going to be a bit special. Last years winner Nicholas Walsh returned a creditable 70 and on leaving the course was reasonably confident of making the cut for Sunday. Little did he know that not only did 70's not make it in but only 2 out of the many 69's made it. Seems bizarre to play to your handicap and not qualify but then again this weekend was a bit special.
On Friday Dom Spillane (15) posted a great round of 63, as did Trevor Sheehan (10) and Mitchel Moynihan (11)
Not to be outdone Colm Burke (8) returned home in 1 over to post a super round of 62. The last group in saw Seamus Beecher (13) sign for a remarkable score of 58 playing the course in just 2 over par.

No fewer than 33 players on the day hit 69 or better so qualifying was clearly not going to be easy. However Saturday saw more of the same with John Whelan (10) posting 63. James Bennett (13) trying to win his brothers prize had a great round of 62 and was well in contention. Pat Murphy (11) and Terence Rumley (11) also had 62's whilst Barry Power (15) scorched home for a 61. Barry was now in fine position to land the double of Captains and Presidents prize.
Anthony O'Rourke (10) and John McGrath (10) both had rounds that we would only dream about. Both players played the course in level par to post net 59's and secured their place in the final three ball for Sunday afternoon along with Seamus Beecher.
Speculation was very high on Saturday night as to who was going to be the likely winner as we had such an array of low scores it was probably going to be one from the last 18 players out. A morning winner was still possible but they would have to really blitz the course to have any chance.
First out Sunday morning was the legend Michael Fitzgerald (6) who played some sparkling golf to return home in 70 shots. Michael's fine round helped him to clinch the Gross prize with a total of seven over for the weekend. Martin O'Driscoll (15) found form at the right time as he also posted a 64 for a 131 total and claim 7th. John O'Donovan (19) claimed Category C with two rounds of 66 for 132 and Anthony Whelan (14) won Category B with a two round total of 131. PJ Rumley (27) claimed the veteran’s prize with 133 and Best Sunday went to Liam Power (16) with a 65. Ger Ahern won 2nd Gross with 147 while Pat Murphy’s 62 claimed the Best Qualifier.
On to Sunday afternoon and the top 18 qualifiers were set to battle it out. The last group out started in great fashion with Seamus getting a great par and John and Anthony both draining fine putts for birdie. As the front nine developed Colm Burke was moving along sweetly as was Terence Rumley, Barry Power was also a serious threat. John McGrath turned one over also and Seamus Beecher and Anthony were still in contention.
Around the turn it looked as if it was going to be the Seamus’ day with pars on holes 9 thru to 12 as John faltered slightly to drop to 3 over.
After the blip on 10 John McGrath then parred 11 thru 15 to establish a 4 shot lead over the field. Meanwhile Barry Power birdied the 18th to post a two round score of 127 to be leader in the clubhouse to set a nice target.

When John double bogeyed the 16th and dropped another on 17th we were set up for a tense finish, with a playoff still a strong possibility.
Three solid pars from the final group saw John home and hosed by 2 shots over Seamus who had 1 to spare over Barry Power.

Terence Rumley, Anthony O'Rourke, John Whelan and Martin O’Driscoll filled positions 4 to 7. Willie Henry completed the double adding the Past President's prize on 134 to the Past Captain's prize.
John was over the moon with his victory and has a smile across his face that will not be removed for a long time to come. His final score of 124 was clearly impressive and being just 6 over for two days golf was fantastic golf. Playing the course in fewer strokes than any other player over the 2 days is also another memory for John to treasure. As usual Jack was gracious, comprehensive and witty in his acceptance speech thanking all who had contributed to the weekend. He paid special tribute to his ever patient and understanding wife Marie. He also singled out for special mention his caddy Paddy – for his guidance and sound advice on the day.

President's Prize to the Ladies
The top 18 ladies went to battle on Sunday afternoon and with the leader board so close it was all to play for. On the day scores were very tight with no one breaking away from the pack. On a tough day with some torrential showers people were finding it tough going. In the end it was a straight battle between Brid Henry and Mary Beecher with Brid securing her first major after 20 years of trying. It just goes to show that perseverance and determination does pay off and someday it can be your day. Brid posted a great round of 68 to beat Mary by 2 strokes. The Gross was won by Betty Joyce and in third place was Patricia Lonergan.
In making the presentations Pat thanked all the various committees and individuals who had contributed to making it such a memorable occasion. He thanked all the ladies and gents who competed and for their good humour and courtesy to him over the duration of the competitions. After the presentation the ever popular “Cheers” provided the music and led by the President and Lady Vice Captain the large crowd present danced the night away.

Country Clubs
Best wishes to Bainisteoir Maurice Cahillane and his Country Clubs squad who will contest the semi-finals and hopefully the final in Ross Golf Club on Sunday next. Remember boys early to bed next Saturday night and stay away from the Killarney hot spots.

18 Hole Stableford.
The recent trend of good weather and scoring seems to be continuing with some fine scores again this weekend.  The winner of the 18 Hole Stableford kindly sponsored by Tom Joe Murphy was Liam Feeney (18) with a mighty score of 43 points. Liam turned with 19 and scorched the back nine parring 7 of the last nine holes. In second place was Club registrar John O’Mahony (25) who carded an excellent 42 points for the second week running. Gross winner was Ger Ahern (4) with 33 points gross. In third place winning on the last nine from Paul Kearney was Kevin Roche (10) with 41 points.

Club Matchplay
Over the last few weeks we have seen many exciting games played of which many had to go to extra holes before a winner emerged. Marty Power and Timmy Sheehan overcame Patsy O’Donoghue and Denis Galvin on the 18th. The battle of the O’Learys also was resolved on the 18th green with sons Paddy and Ted edging out Father Dermot and his partner Pat Lane thanks to a birdie at the last. Gary Dunlop and John Manning overcame seasoned campaigners Bill Ronayne and John Condon also on the 18th. David Lonergan and Michael Burke accounted for brothers in law Maurice Cahillane and Pat Moore. Michael O’Regan and Jim Cashman had a fine victory over Ger Mulcahy and Bill Aherne. The local legends of Michael O’Grady and Dan Howard took care of the young pretenders of Micheal Fitzgerald and Colin Cunningham. Entitlements are hard to beat.

The singles matchplay is rolling along nicely. Seamus Beecher saw off Kevin Roche on the 18th. Ted O’Leary beat Bill Aherne on the 16th, whilst James Bennett birdied the 19th to clinch victory over John Whelan. David Lonergan had to go to the 20th to defeat Anthony Whelan. Ger Hayes beat Eamon Costin and Timmy Sheehan beat Tallow compatriot Jerry Crowley. John McGrath with top drawer golf and 4 birdies defeated Club President in golf of the highest order on the 18th. Paddy O’Leary needed 2 rounds to defeat Liam Feeney on the 18th after being all square after 18 at the first time of asking. Dom Spillane played out of his skin in defeating Bill Ronayne.

The club mixed has drawn some very interesting pairs and matches. Chris Whelan and Betty Joyce proved too good for Cal Aherne and Sheila O’Leary. Seniors pair Dave and Anna Murphy after a fine 1st round victory were just edged out on the 18th by Brian O’Gorman and Patricia Doyle. Mary and Seamus Beecher are still going strong thanks to victory over Tim O’Leary and Sheila Denn. Maurice Cahillane and Hannah Lucas advanced with a win over John McGrath and Marie Condon. Paddy O’Leary and Katherine Moynihan are also safely through after defeating Dan Behegan and Sheena Wilkinson. Pat Morrissey and Anne Bennett played golf of the highest order to account for Bill Ronayne and Patricia Lonergan. Tie of the round was between Michael O’Regan and Gretta Barry and Kevin Whelan and Mag Morrissey. The match went all the way to the 23rd hole with Michael and Gretta coming out on top after a great game.

Congratulations
For the second week in a row a member of Lismore Golf Club recorded a hole in one. Paddy O’Leary achieved the feat at Lee Valley Golf Club on the 175 yard par three 12th Paddy holed out with a sweetly struck 8 iron (yes that’s right an 8 iron).

18 Hole Stableford
This weekend we had a curtailed field due to the Knockanore Classic on Friday and Saturday. Never the less people were out in numbers to enjoy the decent spell of weather we have had for some time. The scoring was like the hot weather as no fewer than 4 players scorching the course with 42 points each. Sean Buckley (11) was the man who came out on top to claim first prize with a great back nine of 23 points. Second place this week went to a man who has been showing some great form in recent months. Our very own Philip Walton (15) also had 42 points with 22 on the back nine. His birdie on the 13th was one of many highlights to his round. 3rd place went to Patsy Heaphy (12) winning on the last six holes from the unlucky John O’Mahony as 42 points would get a prize almost every week. Pasty can thank his two in a row of birdies on the 8th and 9th for setting up his fine round. A special mention for Ger Ahern (4) who recorded his first over hole in at the short 3rd.

Congratulations
Our heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Barry Rumley and his new bride Eilish Brennan on the happy celebration of their marriage last Friday. Congratulations also to Lismore GAA Golf team on winning the Munster Club Finals last week. They will go on to play in the All Irelands later in the year in Faithlegg where I’m sure they will keep the flag flying high for both Club and county. The team consisted of 4 members from Lismore Golf Club namely Brendan Landers, John Whelan, P.J. Coughlan and Ritchie Ormonde.

Junior Cup
Last Saturday morning our Junior Cup team headed to Tramore to play Williamstown. Unfortunately on the day Williamstown got the better of us by winning some very tight matches. Two games went all the day to the eighteenth with Williamstown just edging them. Had these two games gone our way the result could have very different. Thanks to Paul McCarthy and his troops of Michael Fitzgerald, Barry Rumley, Pat Morrissey, Colm Burke and Anthony O’Rourke who represented us on the day. Special mention to Michael Fitzgerald who managed the rare feat of having an albatross on the new 17th.  He holed out with his 2nd shot on the par five from 227 yards after hitting his drive to the ideal location to attempt such a shot.

Open Cross Card Four Ball
Over the weekend we had an open cross card four ball which was kindly sponsored by the O’Flaherty brothers (Joe & Pat). The winners of this interesting format were sponsor Pat O’Flaherty (10) and his brother Neil (21) with a great score of 47 points. Birdies for Pat on the 2nd, 3rd & 11th combined nicely with Neil’s birdie at the 15th and his five three point pars ensured their victory by a single stroke. In second place were the in form Pat O’Brien (13) and his partner Frank Geary (19) whose 24 point back nine returned a fine total of 46 points. The gross was won by Club President Pat Bennett (6) and Colm Burke (8) with a score of 35 points gross. Third place this week was the Ormonde brothers (Ritchie & Billy) who also returned 46 points.

Captain’s Prize. (Mr. Willie Kearney)Barry Power Strolls Home to Clinch Top Prize.
The Captain’s prize kindly presented by Mr. Willie Kearney was held over last weekend in the golf club. In excess of 150 competed in the competition which is a great credit to all those who came to support our hard working Captain Willie. The weather conditions were varied to say the least. High winds and torrential rain was the order of the day on Friday with the late starters battling the worst of the weather. Eddie Fraher (15) was one of the first men out on Friday and made light of the high winds to post a fantastic round of 63. Next best was Liam O’Keeffe (18) whose 65 was great shooting on the day. The next best scores on Friday were from Jim Cashman (17) and Michael O’Grady who both returned rounds of 68. On Saturday after an auspicious start to the day the weather and the scores sparkled in the bright sunshine. The morning slot produced some fine rounds of golf with Timmy Sheehan (15) shooting 63. Not to be outdone Terence Rumley (12), Willie Henry (15), and John Whelan (10) all had 64’s. Ger Ahern (4) also had a 64, which equated to one under for the card and had him in contention for both the Gross and the main prize. Later in the day Donal Caples (16) hit another round of 63 to put him joint top of the leader-board. This lead did not last long as late in the day up popped Tallow goal keeper Barry Power (18) who shot the lights out to finish with a remarkable round of 57. Considering the conditions, few would have believed that such a score was possible. This gave Barry a commanding lead of 6 strokes going into the final round on Sunday. The question was could he hold out under the pressure cooker of going out last on day two.
John Rumley (11) got the ball rolling early on Sunday morning with one of the lowest rounds seen for a while from the early slot. Got signed for a 61 and went around the last nine in 1 under the card. This secured John the prize of Best Sunday. Not to be outdone Seamus Beecher (13) and his Sunday morning sidekick Dan Howard (20) both recorded fine 64’s to get themselves into the mix. Last years Captain Tom O’Donovan (17) signed for a 66 while Club President Pat Bennett (7) and his playing partner Dave Murphy (15) both had excellent scores of 65. Michael O’Grady secured best Veteran with a second successive round of 68. Past Captain was Willie Henry with a 2 round score of 136.
After nine holes of the second day the picture was starting to be clear as who would be the likely candidates to challenge Barry for the first prize. Many were going strong, some steady and some were finding the conditions tough going. It was clear that the main challengers were going to be Ritchie Ormonde, Terence Rumley and Liam O’Keeffe. Barry came to the turn after a steady first eight holes but four pars in a row put him in a commanding position which he held onto in great style. Once he had made a fine par at the last he signed for an excellent second round of 64 and was the clear winner.
We also had some very fine scores from the last groups out. Pat Moore signed for 66 to claim Category 4 with 136. Tom O’Donovan held on to clinch Category 3 also with 136. Category 2 was won by the consistent Denis Galvin whose final round 65 gave him a fine total of 134 and Anthony O’Rourke won Category 1 with 135 with rounds of 68 and 67. The aforementioned Dan Howard was seventh with 134. John Whelan kept his round together to claim 6th with 133 and a pair of 66’s gave Chris Whelan 5th with 132. Making his way to the table for the first time was Liam O’Keeffe who came 4th with a solid 66 onto his 65 giving him a total of 131.  Terence Rumley was always in the mix and his two rounds of 64 & 65 would win many a major. The Gross was won by the mighty Ger Ahern who covered the course in 144 blows for two rounds which is just 6 over the card. Second place went to the vastly experienced and seasoned campaigner, none other than Ritchie Ormonde who followed his 65 with and even better 63. But the man himself Barry Power was by far and away the winner over the weekend as his 2 round total of 121 gave his 1st place by a clear seven stroke margin.
The Bride Valley Band and guests provided some excellent entertainment for the large attendance both before and after the presentation of prizes.  Thanks to all who helped make this a special weekend in the club. To the players and supporters, the bar and catering staff, groundskeepers and many helpers who made Willie’s weekend such a successful one. The Presidents prize is next up on the Calendar on the August Bank Holiday weekend so be sure to get your game in order for what should be another great weekend within Lismore Golf Club.

Club Championships
Over the last few weeks we have had some great matches in our club championships. In the club foursomes Marty Power and Timmy Sheehan overcame Marty McNamara and Sean Desmond on the seventeenth. Patsy Donoghue and Denis Galvin were very impressive in accounting for Sean Buckley and Seamus Desmond. The tie of the round was decided on the 18th green as Pat Morrissey and Chris Whelan edged out John McGrath and Colm Burke. John Whelan and Eamon Power saw off Paul Kenneally and Donal Caples as did Bill Ronayne and John Condon with victory over Tom & John O’Donovan. The President and Vice President are also through to the next round as are Brendan Landers and P. J. Coughlan with victories over Cal Aherne & Ger Hayes and Anthony Whelan and William Cunningham respectively. The mixed foursomes is moving along steadily with all early matches now completed. John McGrath and Marie Condon had a good victory over Pat Bennett and Nora O’Sullivan. Last years winners of Paul McCarthy & Brenda Barry surrendered their title on the 19th as they were beaten by Kevin Whelan and Mags Morrissey. Last years runners up Chris Whelan & Betty Joyce are determined to go one better as they were in fine form seeing off Anthony O’Rourke and Lady Captain Tricia Bolger McCarthy. Cal Aherne and Sheila O’Leary edged out Tom O’Donovan and Connie Dowd on the 19th as did Brian O’Gorman and Patricia Doyle in their victory over previous winners Colm Burke and Joan Cahillane. Tim O’Leary and Sheila Denn and Michael O’Regan and Gretta Barry are also safely through with wins over Micheal & Bernie Burke and Philip Walton and Gerty Murphy.

FDC Accountants Vs Par Due to the inclement weather on Saturday our weekend competition was curtailed to just Sunday. On a very windy day the scoring was of the highest order with Pat O’Brien storming to the front with a score of 5 up. Turning 1 up he had a most impressive 5 wins in a row to secure his victory. The last 3 ball out mopped up the remaining prizes, all returning scores of plus 3. Frank Roche with a 3up back nine clinched second from Gross man John McGrath with Paddy O’Leary third.

Juniors All junior members or those intending to take up golf and their parents are requested to attend a meeting re junior golf in the clubhouse on the coming Thursday the 26th of June. The meeting will only take an hour starting at 7.30 sharp.

Mixed Our mixed team took on Faithlegg last Thursday in Youghal. On a very blustery evening we were just edged by a score of three to two on the day. We had good wins on the day for Pat Morrissey & Joan Cahillane, and Ritchie Ormonde and Mags Morrissey. With a bit of luck things could have gone our way against a strong Faithlegg outfit. Thanks to the selectors Seamus Beecher and Katherine Moynihan for their dedicated work.

Belvedere Trophy On Sunday night last Lismore headed to our neighbours West Waterford for the return leg of this competition. We had a slender lead going in to the match but on the night the host team were just too strong. Many thanks to Paul McCarthy and his squad of players for the effort they put in over the last few months.

Club Championships The final dates for the first round of the club foursomes is the 30th of June and the mixed foursomes cut off date is the 1st of July. Please ensure your match is played by those dates. No extensions.

While the evergreen Ritchie Ormonde (12) fresh from his success in the previous days secured 3rd place on the back nine with an 80. The nett prize was won by East Corks A Boyce (16) with a 65.
The Minor Scratch Cup sponsored by Pat Denn went to Colligan’s Larry Kiely (20) with an 82 which featured birdies on the 2nd and 5th holes. Club Championships
Our club championships are now in full swing with a number of the singles matches having been completed. In the first round reigning champion Ted O’Leary had to fight all the way before seeing off Marty Power on the 17th hole. Last years runner up John Whelan got the better of Pat O’Flaherty, Vice President James Bennett saw off the challenge of Robert Walton on the 16th. Micheal Fitzgerald was in impressive form seeing off PJ Aherne, turning his way with a birdie blitz from the 7th to the 10th. 2 chip in’s helped Seamus Beecher to a victory over Dermot O’Leary. In the second round Pat Morrissey is safely through after defeating Derek Kelly on the 17th, he will now take on Martin O’Driscoll in the next round after he beat Chris Whelan also on the 17th. Finally Patsy O’Donoghue stormed to an impressive victory over former winner Colin Cunningham playing the last 3 holes in 1 under par to secure victory on the 18th. Team Events

Tuesday Bacon @ 5.30: Thursday 5th Open Qualifier. Friday 6th Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th June Junior, Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cup. Classic Timesheet 058-54026

Club Classic
Our annual club development classic was held in the golf club over the long bank holiday weekend. No fewer than 64 teams competed on a course that was in top class condition all weekend. All those who help to contribute to the upkeep of the course should be very proud of the great work that they have been doing as the compliments from near and far were very welcome indeed. The winners of the classic were the men for the big occasion, a family affair of Pad Joe Rumley and his two sons John and Terence. Their score of 63 was a staggering total considering the tough conditions in place over the weekend. All three players contributed handsomely to the card with Pad Joe’s four pars on the par three’s contributing a valuable 12 points to the card. In second place were the Sunday morning specialists of Dan Howard, Seamus Beecher, and Pat Beecher shooting 62 points clinching second place on the last 6 from the Lismore boys of Anthony Whelan, James Shanahan and William Cunningham. The Gross this weekend went to Michael Fitzgerald, James Bennett & Colin Cunningham shooting 46 points gross winning on the back nine. Fourth place went to Eric Flynn, Errol Flynn and Michael Bennett with 61 points winning again on the back nine. The best ladies team was Siobhan Moroney, Mag Morrissey, & Nora O’Sullivan with 57 points just edging it on the back nine from 2 other teams.
Belvedere Trophy
Last Tuesday night saw the return leg of the Belvedere Trophy where we were hosting Goldcoast. The Goldcoast held a commanding lead of 4 -1 going into this return match so it was really an uphill task for the lads on Tuesday night. Paul McCarthy rallied his men and they performed exceptionally well on the night winning all five matches to go through to the next round. The highlight of a very enjoyable night was Larry Kiely’s par putt all the way across the 17th green which fell into the hole on its last roll. Not only did this win their match for them but it also secured the overall victory for the team on the night.

M J O’Brien Trophy
This weekend saw the annual hosting of the MJ O’Brien Trophy kindly sponsored by Austin O’Brien one of the longest running competitions in the club calendar which attracted a big entry. Conditions for the weekend were tough with a strong easterly breeze affecting the scoring. However, John McGrath (11) sporting his tailored shorts, bucked the trend with a steady 64, 3 over for both nines, in the height of the wind and fading light. A shot back in second place was Sean Desmond (13) with 65, finishing with 5 consecutive pars. The Gross winner Barry Rumley (6) 72 who recovered from a poor start to be level par for the last 16 holes. In third place was Ger Hayes (18) with a steady 66.
Club Classic
Our own annual golf classic will take place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. The format is a 3 person team event any combination. This Classic is outstanding value at just €90 including dinner. The competition will take place on the Friday evening and all day on Saturday, Sunday, & Monday. This event is a vital fundraiser for the golf club so your support for this classic is really needed.

The entry sheet for the club mixed foursomes is starting to fill up so be sure to get your names down very soon as the draw is due to take place this weekend.
Pierce Purcell
This past weekend saw Lismore entering the Pierce Purcell competition. We were hoping to build on the success of last year where we reached the area final for only the second time in our history. West Waterford was the venue this year and the course was in splendid condition. Our first opponents were Dunmore East who we beat last year in a tight match. We had a number of new players from last year and picking the team was a difficult task for the selectors. We got off to a slow start with the first 4 pairs all in arrears early on. Only the last pair of Jim Hornibrook and Ted O’Leary were ahead in their match. At the turn things were only slightly better with the seasoned pair of Seamus Beecher and Martin Power making a comeback to lead by 1 hole. Unfortunately our first 2 pairs Pat Kearney and Tom O’Donovan plus PJ Coughlan and Martin O’Driscoll were defeated but only after a tough battle. We now needed to win all of the remaining 3 matches. Things were not looking too good though as Michael Burke and Timmy Sheehan stood on the 15th tee box, 3 holes behind. However the pair battled back to win the 15th 16th and 18th holes to take the tie to extra holes. And when Timmy hit a wedge to 5 feet on the 19th green the tie was over and the comeback was complete. In the meantime Jim Hornibrook and Ted O’Leary secured a victory by 3&2 so it was all down to Seamus Beecher and Martin Power to steer the team home which they duly did by winning the 18th hole for a 1 up victory. It was an amazing victory for the team who were in arrears for most of the day.  Onto Sunday morning where we were up against the host club West Waterford. The course has toughened up in a few days with a very strong wind making it a severe test for all involved. A couple of new players were drafted onto the team and we got off to a much better start. However heading to the turn the home team began to get on top where their greater experience on the fast greens began to show. We were slightly ahead in 2 games but the other 3 were under a lot of pressure. Pat Kearney and Tom O’Donovan put up a brave display against a very strong pairing, however they went down to defeat on the 15th. Colin Cunningham and Martin O’Driscoll battled hard but found their opponents too hot and were defeated 3&2. Ted O’Leary and Paul Kenneally fresh from his holiday in Portugal, gave us hope with a great performance to win 5&4. However when winners in the first round Seamus Beecher and Martin Power lost on the 15th the match was over and the spoils went to the host team. Our remaining pair of Michael Burke and Timmy Sheehan were well in their match after 16 holes, where they were all square after making a very strong comeback. We would like to congratulate West Waterford on a sporting victory and for their hospitality. In the evening West Waterford went on to beat Tramore and we wish them the best when they take on Faithleg in the next round. Thanks to all those who played throughout the year and hopefully next year we can go a little further.

Last Saturday our Country Clubs team struck off to Rathbane in Limerick to take on Spanish Point in the quarter final of this year’s competition. Fine victories for Richie Ormonde, James Bennett & Kevin Roche brought us across the finishing line with all the other matches still well alive on the course. Vice Captains Prize (Mr. Maurice Cahillane) 2008 a Roaring Success.
Seamus Beecher Wins Vice Captains Prize in Dramatic Play Off
On a weekend of high drama our first major of the year went down to the wire finishing with a dramatic 3 way play off deciding the eventual winner. Seamus managed to cross the finishing line to claim victory on Sunday on the same green that he famously clinched the Country Clubs trophy for Lismore in 2006.  The scoring over the qualifying days was exceptional but on Sunday with so much at stake it seemed that a play off was always on the cards with people struggling all around the course.
On Friday we saw scores of 62 from Brian Shanahan (10), 63 from Paudie Prendergast (16), 63 Seamus Beecher (14), and two 64’s from Brendan Hannon (11) and Colm Burke (8) plus many more breaking the standard scratch on the day. Saturday again saw people making light work of the strong winds to produce very impressive scores with Michael Fitzgerald (7) leading the way with a sparkling 63 closely followed by Colin Cunningham (14) also on the same mark of 63. John and Anthony Whelan along with Tom Joe Daly also produced fine rounds of 65 to set up a very interesting leader board.
On so on to Sunday and the first man out on the day was Jerry Crowley (14) who shot a fine 67 which as we would learn later on ended up as the equal low score of the day. This earned Jerry a well deserved prize of Best Sunday. Also in morning slot P.J. Rumley (27) just edged Category 3 on the back nine after he signed for a 68. As the day went on players seemed to be crumbling all over the course and tails of woe seemed to be echoing from every three ball on the course. Everybody thought they had blown their chances when in fact it couldn’t have been tighter. Category 2 was won by Tom Joe Daly (14) with a score of 136, while Category 1 was clinched by Colm Burke (8) with a very credible 135. 5th place went to Richie Ormonde (11) with a fine 135 and the second gross was won by our own version of Ian Poulter and undoubtedly the best dressed player on the day so he claims himself, the great Michael Fitzgerald (7) with 148.  4th place went to big hitting P.J. Aherne (18) whose score of 134 was leading in the clubhouse for some time and many felt as things were going that it might just be enough. The gross went to Killeagh man Ger Ahern (4) with a great two round total of 146. And then it was down to the three amigos. Seamus Beecher was first in to record a score of 133 and many felt he had it in the bag only for Brian Shanahan and Colin Cunningham to spoil the party with fine recoveries on the back nine to also land on 133.
So the stage was now set for our first play off since 1973. The three way play off took place over the 10th, 11th and 18th holes. After a tense battle Brian Shanahan was the first man out losing out after the first three holes. Then we were down to sudden death between Colin Cunningham and Seamus Beecher who battled in out down the 10th hole for the second time with Seamus Beecher claiming his first ever major after many years of trying in Lismore. His message in his acceptance speech was never to give up trying as some day when it does eventually happen it makes the victory all the more sweeter.
Thanks to all those who played over what was a very enjoyable weekend. Thanks also to Anne and Bernie and all their staff for making the weekend all the better with the great service in the bar and catering. Last but by no means least a very special mention to our Vice Captain Maurice Cahillane and his family for providing with a wonderful table of prizes and a very well run and enjoyable weekend’s entertainment.

Country Clubs
The next round of the Country Clubs takes place next Saturday in Rathbane in Limerick with Spanish point in County Clare being our opponents on the day. Best of luck to the team as victory will secure a semi final spot in Ross Golf club in August. So the stakes are high as we will be anxious to get to final’s day again for the third year running.
Mixed Competition: Our mixed is starting next Friday evening with all welcome to come and play in a friendly and light hearted nights’ golf with the customary tea and brack afterwards.
Club Matchplay.
The entry sheet for all the Club Match play competitions are now posted on the notice board. This year we will be having the usual Club Singles and Mixed Foursomes competition. Instead of a four-ball competition we are having a foursome’s competition. Closing date for entry to all of the above match plays is on Sunday the 11th of May.

18 Hole Stableford.
This weekend’s competition saw our recent high scoring continue. The winner this week was handicap secretary, Pat O’Flaherty (11), with a very impressive 42 points. Pat score was made of a level par score on the front nine of 23 points with a tidy 19 to follow on the back nine. In second place this week with 41 points was William Cunningham (18). 3 three pointers on the difficult 4th, 5th, and 6th set up a fine front nine of 22 points. In third place was John Kenneally (12) with 40 points. John’s 21 point back nine pipped Kevin Roche on a countback.

Country Clubs versus Templemore
Last Thursday our first round match of this yea'rs Country Clubs was held in Tipperary Golf Club. On the day we just edged out our annual rivals by a score of 4.5 to 2.5. Wins on the day for James Bennett, Ted O’Leary, Seamus Beecher, and Kevin Roche helped us to victory whilst the ever battling Ritchie Ormonde was progressing nicely on the 19th.

Club Matchplay.
The entry sheet for all the Club Match play competitions are now posted on the notice board. This year we will be having the usual Club Singles and Mixed Foursomes competition. Instead of a four-ball competition, this year we will be having a foursome’s competition which should get fellows in fine tune for all the club team competitions. This should be an interesting change and be a challenging competition for all concerned. Closing date for entry to all of the above match plays is on Sunday the 11th of May.

Many members of Albert’s family and friends were present for this fitting tribute. No doubt this trophy will become a mainstay in our golfing calendar for many years to come. Tuesday Bacon.
The Tuesday bacon started last Tuesday with a fine turn out for the first night of the year. Here’s hoping that this trend will continue for the months ahead. This is a great way for beginners to get to know some of the members and enjoy a fun night out with a relaxing and fun format with the prize being a side of bacon. It is amazing to see how competitive people get on a Tuesday and the pride people get out of winning each week. Draw for partners will commence from 5.30 approx onwards.

18 Stableford
This week’s weather saw a mixture of the four seasons with sunshine, wind, rain, sleet and some flecks of snow passing through the course. This along with the annual course sanding had little or no effect on the scoring this week. The course is in fine fettle after the sanding and the greens will be better than ever in a very short space of time. The winner this week was Terence Rumley (12) who shot the lights out carding a stylish 43 points. He got his round going in the right direction with a birdie at the first and never looked back from then. In second place for the second week in a row was Martin Power (14) carding a consistent round of 42 points, with 21 points on each nine holes. Third place this week went to Timmy Sheehan (14) whose score of 40 points just edged out David Clohosey (17) due to a superior last nine holes. Next week we have our first qualifying 18 hole competition which is kindly sponsored by David Hayes Pro Shop, Dungarvan. This competition is being run in conjunction with the annual Amm Amm Qualifier. The qualifying brackets for the Am Am section are (0-7), (8-13), and (14-18).

This week we had our second 18 hole singles competition of the year. With the weather conditions causing havoc with ground conditions we are still playing under winter rules. The versus par competition still produced excellent scores and a tight finish. The winner with a fantastic score of 5 up was Patsy Heaphy (12) just edging out Martin Power (14). Martin playing some storming golf to finish second with a score of 4 up.  His card was all the more impressive due to having 5 losses and nine wins. In third place was Alan Mahoney (14) who also had 8 wins and 5 losses to card a score of 3 up.

Glanbia Country Life Club Classic
Inspite of the poor weather at the start of the weekend there was an excellent turnout and some top class golf in the club classic over St Patrick’s weekend. The course was in excellent condition and played to its full yardage. The winning trio with a first rate nett score of -11 were country member Pat Kearney, Anthony O’Regan and Fermoy based  Kevin O’Keeffe. They started like a train with 5 consecutive 3’s and completed the job with 3 birdies and an eagle on the back nine. In second position were local heroes Pat Morrissey, Martin O’Driscoll and Tralee native Derek Kelly who finished in a birdie blitz taking just 13 strokes to complete the last 4 holes. Gross winners with a fine score of -6 were the brothers Ritchie and Billy Ormonde along with Seamus Desmond, they started with 3 birdies on the first 3 holes and repeated the trick on the 10th 11th and 12th. In third with a nett score of 59.5 were the family trio of Pat Morrissey, Mag Morrissey and Nora O’Sullivan. Whilst the veterans of Seamus Beecher and Dan Howard along an experimental full back in the shape of John McCarthy beat off the remainder of the challengers to finish 4th in 60.1
Next weekend sees our Easter Open which is also our first 18 holes singles of the new year. As usual this weekend is kindly sponsored by club member Pat Moore of Pat Moore Transport and Delivery Service. South East League
This week saw us head to Fota to play against Youghal Golf Club. At this stage of the competition we were out of contention but we still put in a great performance on the day winning by a score of 9 to 3.  We had wins on the day for Pa Morrissey and Ritchie Ormonde, Paddy O’Leary and Frank Roche, Anthony O’Rourke and Declan Glavin, Seamus Beecher and Martin Power, and a great half point by Martin O’Driscoll and Billy Ormonde. We would like to thank all the people who represented the club over the last 5 weeks as they have given the selectors plenty to think about for upcoming shield matches.

Dermot O’Leary Agri Ltd Spring League Final
The final of the plate and league proper were held last Saturday in blustery conditions. The pressure of the occasion meant the scoring on the day was not up to usual high standards, barring the odd exceptional score. The plate final was a very tight affair with the Presidents’ men (Pat Bennett) just edging Ger Ahern’s team by a score of 4 to 3. Ger Ahern edged his own personal battle with the President on the last hole by virtue of a tap in birdie.  Pat had wins on the day by Colin Paul, Donal Caples, Jim Cashman, & Michael Bennett. The league proper was again a tense and close affair. In the end Pa Morrissey’s team beat Colm Burke’s troops by a score of 5 to 3. First match out saw our sponsor Dermot O’Leary winning by a 2 point margin getting the 1st win for Pa’s men. The second match saw a second win for Pa with Patsy O’Donoghue winning on a count-back as scores were tied after the 12 holes. David Clohosey secured the first win for Colm by a margin of 1 point. Liam Power shot the lights out shooting 31 points in his match against Philip Walton. It was unfortunate for Philip as his standard of play would have been good enough to win many of the matches. A narrow one point victory for Timmy Sheehan secured win four for Pa Morrissey. P J Coughlan then had win number two for Colm to narrow the gap. Match seven was decided on the last green with Paddy O’Leary piping John Kenneally making in 5 to 2. Colm Burke gained consolation by winning the battle of the Captains on a count-back by virtue of his birdie 2 at the last. The weekly competition was won by Liam Power (16) with his excellent 31 points, made up of 8 pars and a birdie. Second place went to Colin Cunningham (14) who shot an impressive 30 points. Third place went to Michael Bennett (19) who posted a very nice 29 points. The turn out for this years winter league has been excellent with players turning out in record numbers. Thanks to all who participated and we hope to see as many out as possible playing in our St Patrick’s Weekend Mini Classic. This is a 3 person scramble priced at $75 per team which is great value for a great day out golfing. Timesheet 058 54026

12 Hole Stableford sponsored by Printmaster
All of us mere mortals are wasting our time these days in trying to win a prize in our weekly competition kindly sponsored by Printmaster. The thought of having 31 points and not getting onto the podium seems hard to believe. This winner this week was Michael Byrne (22) with a sparkling round of 32 points. His score was just good enough to secure first on the last 6 holes from Frank Geary (19) whose 32 points was just also good enough to beat the ever young Christy Hanrahan (19) on the last 6 holes. Mention also for Vice President James Bennett who lost with 30 points a few weeks back and his 31 points this week was still not good enough. Ger Ahern (4) posted a fabulous score of 30 points for the second week running which equates to 3 under par. Great stuff Ger.

South East League
This week saw us take on Fota at Mitchelstown Golf Club. Fota were leading by 2 points going into this match so it was a make or break day for us. We started with all guns blazing and were up in four matches around the turn. Unfortunately things took a turn for the worst and we only managed to win one of those games and halved another. Our winners on the day were new pairing of Ted O’Leary and Paul Kenneally, while Colm Burke and Bill Aherne secured a valuable half. Thanks to all who played on the day. The managers have the envious task of picking 12 more players for next week to go to Fota as people are very eager to offer their services for next week.
